Message from Dorothy Gunnee, Director for many years
As this will be my final concert of 26 years with the Music School, I would like to invite some former pupils and staff to play with the orchestra on 26 May. Numbers will be limited by accommodation and I’ll have to arrange music for you so please make contact before 19 May through info@egms.org.uk or talk to me at Bannerman any Saturday except 5th May. Please come along and join us for at least one rehearsal – Saturdays, 10:00 – 10:40 except 5th May. We will delighted to see you!
EGMS was established in 1997 and is a unique, integrated approach of introducing primary school aged children to a wide range of life skills in music making by individual tuition on singing and playing musical instruments. Between 120 and 150 children receive lessons in recorder, flute, clarinet, piano, brass, violin, viola, cello, and percussion. The individual music lessons are linked to group work in music theory, orchestra and recorder ensembles and with singing within choirs and solo performance.
The School was established to provide music lessons for children from the East End of Glasgow, helping build self-esteem and confidence in their abilities. The children are encouraged to take part in public performances organised by the school and at more formal Music Festivals. The School provides instruments on free loan to the children and is fully inclusive, welcoming children of all levels of ability and from all religious and racial/ethnic backgrounds.
We hold open days in September and children accepted in to the School attend lessons which take place between 9am and 12noon on Saturdays during school terms at Bannerman High School, Baillieston Road, Glasgow, G69 7NS.
Where possible we ask parents to make a small contribution towards running costs but otherwise we rely entirely on donations from grant-making bodies and our fundraising initiatives to keep the project going.
Our aim is to ensure the development of children’s interests and abilities so that when they move into a secondary school environment, they do so with a sense of self-worth and real skills that can be built upon.
